Abstract
Pajoo-Goon is located in the west-northern part of Kyunggi-Do and borders on Kaepoong-Goon,Jangdan-Goon, and Yunchun-Goon on the north, with Yangjoo-Goon on the east, with Koyang-Goonon the south, to which, Kimpo-Goon is neighboured on the south. The eastern part of both Pajoo-Goonand Koyang-Goon is relatively mountainous and thewestern part of both Goons are composed of flat fields and low mountains. Pajoo-Goon contain seleven Myuns, Tanhyun, Andong, Kyoha. Imjin, Jori, Kwangtan, Joonae. Wolyong, Papyung, Juksungand Chunhyun. Koyang-Goon contains six Myuns,Shindo, Wondang, Byukje, Joong, Songpo and Jido. Each Myun has about 10,000-15,000 population andhas 5 to 10 Ris.
This study was directed to these Goons as apart of the program of studying directly making a trip to each Myun in every Goon in Kyunggi-Doas finding out the districts which have the crayfish and crabs having Paragonimus metacercaria is urgent because many children in rural areas eat raw and slightly roasted crayfish and crabs and there is a traditional custom in Korea of taking raw crayifsh juice for tile treatment of measles, producing many public health problem.
One primary school from each Myun was selected and the pupils in older age groups were tested for this study being asked about their custom of eating raw and inadequately cooked crayfish and crabs and their environmental situation regarding drinking water, and testing them with Paragonimus and Clonorch is antigen. The crayfish and crabs caught from these Myuns Ivere examinrd for Paragonimus metacercaria.
Many children in eastern mountainous areas in both Goons ate raw crayfish and poorly cooked crayfish and many children in the western flat field areas in both Goons ate soysouce soaked crabs, poorly cooked crabs and raw crabs. The children who drank the water from shallow wells are many in the mountainous areas but few in the flat field areas. Those who drink the water from shallow wells have possibility of acquiring Paragonimus metacercaria from the water directly in the thickly endemic areas, Very few pupils drank the frater of streams in these Goons.
The districts showing higher positive rate withParagonimus skin tests have infested crayfish with Paragoaimus metacercaria in Pajoo-Goon and the districts disclosed as having higher incidence of paragonimiasis from this study were Balnang-Riin Kwangtan-Myun and in Chunhyun-Myun in Pajoo-Goon. All of those are located at the deep mountainous areas where crayfish and the snails, the first intermediate host. of paragonimiasis, are abundant but crabs few. None of the Myuns of Koyang-Goon are suffering from paragonimiasis but are suffering from clonorchiasis in Jido, Songpo, Joong and Wondang-Myun.
Crabs are abundant in the flat field areas of western part of both Pajoo and Koyang-Goon and are not likely to be a second intermediate host of paragonimiasis at present from this study in these Goons. The infestation rate of crayfish wih Paiagonimus metacercaria was found to be as follows:0.8% in Kwangtan-Myun, and 2.5% in Chunhyun-Myun.
The custom of taking raw crayfisih juice for the treatment of measles is prevalent in these Goons which may give many harmful effects to growing children. wish the puplic heaIth authorities and the school authorities in these Goons would strive to eradicate this bad custom.
